Divorce Support Group

Many parents find the teen years difficult. Some feel that they have failed in the job of child rearing particularly as their teenager challenges them and withdraws from them. This course offers practical ways of helping parents interact with their children. It includes looking at goals of misbehaviour, communication skills, who owns the problem, promoting self-esteem, the difference between praise and encouragement, problem solving, family meetings, discipline issues, learning from consequences, moods, eating habits and sexuality. Parents feel supported through a mutual sharing of problems and brainstorming of ideas.

Bereavement Support Group
|
This group is for individuals who have gone through a bereavement and offers information and emotional support. Issues discussed will include the stages of grief and the effects of grief, but the major focus is, however, on mutual support.

Coping with Anger: A Psycho Educational Support Group

Anger is possibly the most poorly handled emotion in our society. Anger can be friend or foe, depending on how we express it. The aim of this group is to identify the anger cycle and develop skills to interrupt it, enhance communication and relaxation, and learn how to assert yourself as a constructive alternative to anger.

CPD POINTS: 6This training course facilitates an understanding of the emotional process of divorce and enables the counsellor to work with clients who are struggling with the loss. Areas that are covered on the first day include the stages of divorce and the scope of physical and emotional changes involved. The second day covers aspects related to blended families and counselling strategies within this context.

This group caters for parents of children aged between 5 - 12 years who wish to enhance their relationships with their children. It focuses on a democratic style of parenting. It teaches parents positive ways to relate to discipline and how to encourage their children. It is based on principles of mutual respect and equality. It gives a practical, step by step approach to parenting.

This educational group is for parents in remarried families, both the step parent and the biological parent. It helps the group members understand the unique structure and challenges of step-families. It focuses on strengthening the new marital unit as well as understanding the child’s point of view with guidelines for all in strengthening the new family unit.

A group which will offer information and support for single parents. In broad terms the focus will include the difficulties encountered in parenting our children, but will also include the blocks we may encounter in taking care of our own well-being.

Divorce and Family Mediation
CPD POINTS: 20Mediation skills and strategies for family and divorce mediation. This is a 50 hour course for attorneys, advocates, social workers, psychologists, social and corporate counsellors, clergy, volunteers and lay counsellors, and allied professionals. This training has been accredited by the South African Association of Mediators (S.A.A.M.). The course includes the legal, cultural, psychological and financial implications of divorce as well as mediation skills, counselling and conflict resolution.
